The question is, with so many amazing Belgian beers "Where do you begin?". So, rather than tasting standard beers which are readily available in supermarkets nationwide, I thought I would start as I mean to go on.
The first beer that I am going to review is a strange one.
Mongozo Coconut- 3.6% - Huyghe Brewery.
The Backstory
Mongozo Coconut is brewed by the Huyghe Brewery, Melle, East Flanders, and is one in a series of 'exotic' beers (these will be reviewed at a later date). Mongozo means ‘cheers’ in the native language of Henrique Kabia, one of the founders of Mongozo beer.
Appearance
Although the images of this beer show only the bottle, when drunk in Belgium it is served in a branded Mongozo half coconut. This adds a theatricality to the drink.
As you can see from the images, it is a cloudy light yellow / peach colour. Mongozo Coconut keeps a 'fine bubbled' head whilst drinking.
Smell
Mongozo Coconut does what it says on the tin: it smells of beautifully of coconut. The very sweet smell has a hint of chocolate to it probably due to its sweetness.
Taste
Surprisingly, Mongozo has a sweet coconut milk taste to it. This is quickly followed up by a good 'tangy' flavour similar to a fruit juice, such as pineapple. After a moment there is a bitter note which leaves you wanting more. There is a fizz to the Mongozo, but it is light.
Overall
This is a really impressive fruit 'style' beer that really delivers, especially on the flavour front. It would be perfect for a barbeque. I would not be able to drink lots of it as it would be too sweet for me. However, I most definitely would drink it again. A must try for those who want to try something a little strange, yet do not want to be disappointed. You will enjoy this beer.
