The second cherry beer of the night is Bacchus. This beer is readily available in a number of supermarkets in the UK for under £3.00 per bottle.
Bacchus Kriek- 5.8%- Vanhonsebrouck Brewery- Ingelmunster.
The Backstory
Bacchus Kriek beer is based on Bacchus Flemish Old Brown by the same brewery. The Vanhonsebrouck brewery also produce a raspberry beer which is beautiful. The brewery produces a variety of beers including Casteel, which I am yet to try.
For at least six months, the pulp of morello cherries matures in the gueuze-lambic. The stones produce a subtle taste of almond.
Under the experienced eye of the cellar master, the young kriek is blended with the old lambic to develop its full flavour.
Appearance
As with Kriek Boon, Bacchus Kriek is presented in a half champagne bottle. The bottle is hand wrapped with paper, on which is printed graphics and information about the beer. By comparison to Kriek Boon, Bacchus is darker in colour. It is also clearer in its transparency. There appears to be more fizz from this kriek.
Smell
The smell of Bacchus is sweeter than the Kriek Boon. It is not as sharp, but it still retains its strong smell of cherries. It is well rounded and offers a balanced smell.
Taste
Bacchus cherry has a sharp cherry taste. However, this is balanced with a sweetness which differs from the Kriek Boon. It has a thoroughly enjoyable flavour which will make you open a second, third, maybe fourth bottle.
Overall
This is a brilliant beer, one of my favourites. In my opinion it is what a kriek should be. Bacchus is made even better due to its availability in many supermarkets.
"Will I drink it again?" is the wrong question. The right question is "When will I drink it again?" answer...soon.
